Changes to naming for IV orders in the EMR
For medication orders in the EMR, “IV” route has been renamed to “IV injection” to clearly distinguish IV Injections from IV Infusions. This is in alignment with the terminology used in the Australian Injectable Drugs Handbook.
IV infusion = orders administered via infusion pumps
IV injection = simple medication orders NOT administered by infusion pumps. Includes push or slow push
The instructions to give the medication as an “IV push” have been removed from order sentences.
